It has been a year since I started coloring as a hobby, and what a year it’s been! Today I want to show you the differences between Ohuhu and Restly markers: aka the name brand expensive markers or a cheaper alternative. I hope that this video will help you when making your decision on what markers to get.
quick overview
So quick facts: Ohuhu* will run you $99 for 120 markers and Restly* is $36 for 120 markers. Aka, $0.83 per marker for Ohuhu, and $0.30 per marker for Restly.
Ohuhu has a few variations in their marker types, depending on your preference. You can get brush tip + chisel, brush + fine tip, or fine tip + chisel. I went with brush and chisel since that’s what I have with Restly and I wanted a similar comparison.
With Ohuhu you also have tons of marker pack options ranging in both size and colors. Whereas with Restly you only have two pack options: 40 or 120 markers.
coloring with ohuhu & restly
My experience coloring with Restly and Ohuhu markers is pleasant for both of them. They each have their pros and cons.
I’ll start with Restly first. Restly’s are a great beginner alcohol marker. There are 120 markers which gives you a good variety of colors, they don’t smell bad, and they color decently. Like with all alcohol markers, they will ghost or bleed through most papers but not always onto the next page. I always put a piece of paper in between just in case, but I haven’t had any issues with the Restly’s bleeding through that. Because the ink isn’t as juicy as the Ohuhu markers, I feel like the chances of it bleeding through is slimmer.
Restly markers are louder when coloring, and that doesn’t bother me at all but I know it can bother some people. I actually quite like it for filming videos!
Ohuhu markers are just a smoother coloring experience. The ink is juicier, the brush is a little more flexible, and the coloring is quieter. I will say, though, that because the brushes are more flexible there is a larger room for differences in how each color feels. I will get in the groove of coloring with one marker then go to the next color and it’s totally different. That’s such a minor thing but it is worth noting because it does mess me up sometimes.
Ohuhu markers do bleed more heavily than Restly, and they will sometimes spread out more. That part mostly depends on the paper type, but I think it’s just because there’s more ink coming out at one time compared to the Restly markers.
The chisel tip for both markers tends to bleed more heavily than the brush tip. I don’t often color with the chisel tip, but I do find it works well when trying to draw skinny lines.
color options
The options for colors are pretty similar between the two. I do feel like that even with 120-ish markers there are still some colors that I still would want, and sometimes I will combine the two sets of markers. For instance, in the base set Restly has a really nice peachy orange color that Ohuhu doesn’t and I clearly love that color so it definitely comes to mind as one that is missing.
I think both are missing a good set of skin tones, but Ohuhu does have a set specifically for that which is why I think they don’t have a ton in their 100 set. I think eventually I will get another set from Ohuhu, but I’m in no rush simply because of the price.
That is another thing to note: Restly doesn’t have any other sets. They have 120 markers and that’s it. At least with Ohuhu if you had the space and money, you could increase your color options and get 300+ markers.
which one lasts longer?
Between Ohuhu and Restly, Ohuhu definitely lasts longer. I found that if I’m coloring in a large section Restly markers will start to dry out. I do have the markers in their case with the brush tip pointed down so that the ink isn’t draining out, but even with that I still struggle to get through some larger sections.
Ohuhu, so far, hasn’t had that issue for me. Their markers seem to be a lot juicier, and though I haven’t had them as long as the Restly markers I do feel like they will last longer over time.
do they blend?
Both markers are supposed to blend, but I’m gonna be so honest… I am not great at it with either brand. I don’t mind too much because there aren’t a lot of times where I wish to blend. I will say that the Restly markers dry faster and the Ohuhu markers kind of sit on top of the page longer. So with Restly it is easy to add shadows on top of a color and it’ll blend out, but with Ohuhu you have to wait a little bit or it will really spread out and you almost won’t be able to see it. So it’s better to wait until they dry so you can actually see the shadowing.
do they yellow the pages?
Restly markers will yellow over time. This is something I learned the hard way, not even knowing that was a thing that happened with alcohol markers. Ohuhu markers haven’t yellowed at all for me, which is great. What I do with the Restly markers is just tape a piece of paper to the back of the page I just colored to prevent it from yellowing onto the design behind it.
which one is better?
Okay so now you’re probably wondering… which one do I think is better? And my answer to that would be: both. I think Ohuhu is obviously a little better quality, and last longer… however they are expensive and I struggle to say you must get them because of the price.
The Restly markers have held up for an entire year, they’re less than $30 for 120 markers… but they aren’t as juicy, and they yellow the pages. So the choice really comes down to the cost, in my opinion. Because you CAN live with the faults of the Restly markers if you are on a budget.
I’d love to know which markers you would choose between the Ohuhu and Restly markers?!
