3 pieces of content you need for Youtube
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve seen surrounding Youtube growth is to have a variety of help, hero, and hub videos. Not sure what those are? No worries, that’s exactly what we’re going to talk about today.
help videos
Help videos are your “how to” videos that your consumers or peers are searching for. These videos are great for the algorithm and as an SEO strategy, but it should be noted that people who only subscribe or watch your help videos might not be longtime viewers of your channel. They came for one thing and maybe they’ll come back for another, but this should not be 100% of your content.
Some examples of help videos are:
hero videos
Hero videos are your out-of-the-park ideas. The videos that might take you the longest to film and edit. The videos about major milestones in your business. These are the videos that you expect to go viral because they are bigger than your everyday videos.
Some examples of hero videos are:
hub videos
Hub videos are for keeping your subscribers engaged and to keep coming back. These are usually recurring videos like day in the life or packing videos. These videos are for your core audience who truly care about you and are here for YOU and not just one video.
These videos are great because you don’t need to always reinvent the wheel, you can keep doing what is already working. However, if you only post hub videos your channel might struggle to grow. If growth isn’t a priority of yours though, you can post as much of these as you want.
Some examples of hub videos are:
why does this matter?
Okay, now that we know what the 3 H’s are you might be wondering why any of it matters. And what I have found the most valuable in learning about this is that if you lean too far one way you might not be reaching the goals you want.
So first of all, if your goal is to just have fun and post whatever content you want and not make money from YouTube, then this doesn’t really apply to you. Similarly, if you are a small business owner who only posts packing videos, these tips could help you if you wanted but it’s possible you don’t want to teach and you only want to make one type of content. That’s totally fine too!
However, if you are a content creator or just someone who wants to monetize your channel then it’s important to have a balance between the three content types.
If you are only trying to please the algorithms by making help or hero content, you’ll never have any loyal subscribers. You might have great watch time but struggle to gain subscribers. On the flip side, if you only post hub content you might struggle to grow your watch hours.
By having a mix between the three, you’ll work on nurturing your current subscribers while occasionally trying to get new subscribers in.
At the end of the day the most important thing to remember is: consistency.
By creating a mixture of help, hero, and hub content it should be easier to create that consistency. You might find yourself struggling to come up with ideas then realize you haven’t created any tutorial or help videos recently, and suddenly once you start thinking along those lines
I would suggest doing a mix of the three. You want to make sure you are making videos that your core audience would like as well as videos that will get you seen through search from non-subscribers. If you lean too far into the help videos, you might wind up with a lot of subscribers who aren’t watching your videos. But if you lean too far into hub videos you might see stagnant or minimal growth. It definitely depends what your goals are with Youtube, but overall I’d recommend doing a mix of the three.
